"In this world there is no greater adornment than purity of conduct, no greater refuge, and no other basis for the flowering of insight and wisdom. Ethical conduct brings a beauty that is not plastered onto the outside, but instead comes from the heart and is reflected in the entire person. Suitable for everyone, regardless of age, station or circumstance, truly it is the adornment for all seasons."

~ Sayadaw U Pandita, the great Burmese Buddhist Meditation master

May Day ~ Lei Day is a time of celebration and renewal. It is a time to bring forth the goodness in ourselves and share it with the world.

Join Vipassana Hawaiʻi Resident Teacher Jesse Maceo Vega-Frey for a weekend in silent meditation where we will carefully string our lei of inner beauty moment by moment through a clear and caring relationship with the experience of body and mind.

Vipassana (Insight) meditation was developed in the ancient teachings of the Buddha who sought to help liberate beings from suffering.

~ With a commitment to ethical conduct we build the foundation of our spiritual journey.

~ Through the cultivation of concentration and mindfulness we come to see the nature of phenomena in a way that unravels our attachment, aversion, and delusion in regards to experience.

~ By developing the divine abodes of lovingkindness, compassion, appreciation, and equanimity we create a balanced mind whose peaceful love for the joys and hardships of the world is unhindered by preference.

Guidance in sitting and walking meditation will be offered as well as daily Dhamma talks to help integrate the practice into our lives.

We will be supported by the beautiful historic campus of the Kohala Institute at ʻIole which has become a vital part of the North Kohala Community.

At the close of the retreat, all yogis are invited to come to tour the nearby land of Vipassana Hawaiʻi where we soon hope to build a temple and community contemplative space!

~ Logistics ~

Transportation from off-island will be at your own expense. Please inquire about taxi or shuttle ideas.

Teacher dana - In accordance with tradition, all Vipassana Hawai’i internationally respected teachers offer their teachings free of charge and are supported through the freely-offered generosity of students and supporters. Costs associated with retreats cover the expenses associated with food, lodging, and administration but not teacher time, training, effort, or energy. We believe that this commitment helps keep the purity of the teachings alive and thriving, as it has for millennia. They do not collect salaries in keeping with the time-honored tradition of sharing openly the chance for peace. This allows us to pass on our direct facility costs and keep our registration fees as low as possible. As a result, we strive to give back in monetary gratitude so that they may continue their endeavors and share their wisdom. Dana, or generosity, can be offered by cash or check at the end of the retreat or online here.

Please note our Cancellation Policy:
If you cancel more than 45 days prior to the retreat: We will refund all fees less administrative / service fees - usually $25 - $50.00
If you cancel 14 - 44 days prior to the retreat: We will refund all fees less $100.00.
If you cancel less than 14 days prior to the event: Unfortunately we cannot afford to offer a refund. Last-minute cancellations are costly and usually mean that others cannot attend the retreat.
