Summary

Our time together we will be held in silence, learning about the fundamental practices and principles of Vipassana: mindfulness, concentration, and loving-kindness used to stabilize the mind and gain powerful insight into the nature of life in order to alleviate suffering. Jesse will emphasize mindfulness of breath, mindfulness of the 4 elements in the body, and body-based "divine abodes" of lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. In particular we will be sensitizing to the subtle forces at play in our meditation practice so that we attune to the delicate balance between energy and rest, clarity and kindness.

Evening talks are free and open to the public.

Overnight accommodations at the temple are limited to 8 people. There are two private bedrooms furnished with queen beds that can house one yogi in each room, and the third bedroom with 2 single beds. There are also 4 futon spaces available at the temple.

We also have available five spots at the Plantation House, a completely restored lovely 1940’s plantation-style house from Lanai pineapple days. It is located two houses from the Hongwanji Buddhist Temple and within walking distance of Dole Square, the heart of historic Lanai City. The Plantation House has 2 bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms. Bedroom one has a queen-sized bed and bedroom two has two single beds. There is also a futon or pull-out couch sleeping option. One bathroom has a full-sized shower and the other is a half-bath. The Plantation House can sleep up to 5 yogis.

If you are coming from off-island and wish to arrive early or extend your stay on Lanai or have questions regarding how to get to the temple, please contact our retreat manager

Shuttle transportation is available to the Hongwanji from both the airport and the ferry for $10. We will send details upon registration!

Teacher dana - In accordance with tradition, all Vipassana Hawai’i internationally respected teachers offer their guidance and teachings free of charge and are supported through the freely-offered generosity of students and supporters. Costs associated with retreats cover the expenses associated with food, lodging, and administration but not teacher time, training, effort, or energy. We believe that this commitment helps keep the purity of the teachings alive and thriving, as it has for millennia. They do not collect salaries in keeping with the time-honored tradition of sharing openly the chance for peace. This allows us to pass on our direct facility costs and keep our registration fees as low as possible. As a result, we strive to give back in monetary gratitude so that they may continue their endeavors and share their wisdom. To learn more about the practice of dana, and to offer it online, please visit our website.

Jesse Maceo Vega-Frey moved to the Island of Hawai‘i in 2011 to serve as key support for the Hawai‘i Island and O‘ahu sangha. As a teacher of Vipassana (insight) meditation within the broader context of the Theravadan Buddhist tradition, his teaching aims to inspire the skills, determination, and faith necessary to realize the deepest human freedom. A student of Michele McDonald, his approach is rooted in the tradition of Mahasi Sayadaw of Burma and encourages an exploration of the relationship between ethics, insight, and action. He is the resident teacher for Vipassana Hawai’i and teaches around the world. Jesse was a co-founder of The Stone House, a center for spiritual life and social justice in Mebane, NC and was a board member of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship for several years. Jesseʻs writing, talks, and schedule can be found online here!
